Roger Federer failed to qualify for the second round in Doha, beating Thomas Schoorel Dutch on his first official match of 2011.
The Swiss beat the Slovenian by 7-6 (3), 6-3 in a clash that decided in just one hour and 19 minutes. Schoorel showed signs of quality and had three breaking balls (0-40) to win the first set 5-4 in his favor on the scoreboard. But Federer responded and took part in the sudden death which was much higher.
In the second set, the Swiss took the lead in the fourth game (3-1) and were no longer allowed more forgetfulness, saving the two breaking balls he faced. Now Federer will face in the second round with compatriot Marco Chiudinelli, who bowed to Moroccan Reda Amrani 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
